as our herd has grown I need to find a better way to keep records. My current method works but is not efficient for a larger number of animals. I found a program that looks very promising Kintraks. It is kind of a pedigree program for the individual breeder. Obviously we have Legacy for the pedigree piece of it but I think it will be nice to have the animals arranged by pedigree. Things that I keep track of is who is with what bull when. I track heat dates and breed dates. I also track things like birth weights. I have not got in to it much but looks like I can record breed dates and it will automatically give me do dates. I will likely use the journal section heavily. Also has a documents section where you can save files specific to each animal. I can save all my testing results pdfs in there. Looks like it is pretty customizable to. You can enter all animals that you currently or have had and then filter the list show only ones you currently have or many other criteria.

I'll be following what you find out. I'm using the Excel spreadsheet you gave me five years ago.

This could be really useful. I'm anxious to hear how it works out.

So far I like it. 39 of my animals entered to far but not all info from each animal entered yet. The key is the custom filed you make. So far for custom fields I have ear tag, pha, chondro, A2, birth weight, I also have one for my Colorado animals. I created custom field for sire and dam even though that info is already in there. Note you can not call it sire and dam because there is already a field for that and it creates a problem when you try to search so it is abbreviated. The reason for some of those custom fields is for searching. Lets say I want to see all calves from one cow or one bull I can bring it up with just a couple of clicks. Same with the field for my Colorado heard. I can choose that and it will show only those. I did find a glitch custom field 11 does not work correctly so dont use it until they fix it. There are some things I would change Like the ability to make a journal note apply to multiple animals all at once. example I had a need this weekend to put 2 groups of animals together and they are both in with bulls. So I had to go make a journal note for 11 different animals so that I can keep track of who is with what bull when. It does not take long when you make one it ask you if you want to make another note. So you can just keep doing it and selecting a different animal in the list but it would be nice to just make one and have the ability to apply it to many different animals. There is a cage option which would work you can put a group of animals in different "cages" the problem is there is no time note in it. So when you move them you cant see where they were previously or at what time they were there.

someone had asked me about kintraks so I thought I would revive this post. It is still working good for me. A few tips. make sure you set it to backup and it will save a backup copy every time you close the app. under the mating section set the gestation period at 283, preg check at 21, and nest at 42 ( you cant change the header name) but if you record the heats it will then show you the next 2 possible heats as well as the due date in a table format. there is also an option for breed. I am going to start using that field to identify our different herds and to also identity the Legacy and traditional animals. this will make it real easy to just select legacy and it will show only my Legacy animals.
