Got 3" of rain last night. Glad I moved the dexters to higher ground on Wednesday. I just repaired fence 2 weeks ago that was damaged by flooding last year. I dont think this was enough to take it out again but I have not been down to check on it yet. I have been working on fence for a couple of weeks now. I dont need anymore to repair.

I hope your rain doesn't hurt your fences. Fixing fence is hard work at any time, but fixing fence when the ground is muddy is too much.
Send me soe of your excess rain. It is dry and dusty here.

It looks like the permanent fence is fine. Deer ripped out poly wire like they never have. Not sure how they caught it and just kept going . unwound most of a quarter mile real. The only thing that stopped it was that it was tied into the high tinsel wire. The cows got into my hay but only tore up a few bales. I think the deer were running from the flood waters.

WE finally broke our drought last night. Got 1.75" of hard rain. We'll probably see the improvement in the grass within the week. The National Weather Service is predicting more rain for today.

Good to hear you all got some much needed rain. It has been so dry.
Thankfully we got some too last week. Probably 3"+ Over a couple days so it got to soak in nicely. The fields have even greened up a bit, but it's probably too late in the yr to do much growth here. But it is a lot nicer to look at. The temps have dropped too, so I know the Dexters (and me) are really enjoying that.
Thankfully we were able to get plenty of hay earlier this summer, because we sure have needed it.

We've been watching this hurricane coming up. Very scary for those closer to the coast.
Gene hopefully you and Judy will not be in harm's way. The forecast keeps changing. It looks like just some rain possible here, but you guys really be careful. It looks like it is going to be a bad one.

We just got back a few days ago from vacationing down in NC. Such devastation in so many areas down there and along the way. We saw huge trees fully leafed out, blown over. Sometimes right on top of homes. Some of these were probably hundreds of yrs old.
So many people lost everything from the flooding. Mattresses/furniture/ruined clothing piled up everywhere in so many areas. Such a heartbreaking scene. So many people were caught by surprise when areas that never flood had feet of water running through them.
Such good people really in need of our prayers.

Oh, how I wished you could have swung by here on your way to or from NC. It would have been great to have put an eyeball on you.
It has been so dry here that I hired a young girl to help me clean out the barns. It was all dry and dusty, perfect for loading into the manure spreader and scattering over the pastures. We worked until I was too tired to go on. The pastures all look like they have been snowed on, due to the amount of feathers in the compost from the barn.
In line with the tree devastation you saw in NC, Karrie, I have a huge old pine tree here that has died. Maybe of old age. It is so rotten and eaten by woodpeckers that is is dangerous. If I leave it to fall, it can fall across the road, across the fence into the pasture or on top of my hay barn. Guess which one will happen if I don't do anything?
I've booked a tree surgeoon with a bucket truck to come here tomorrow to take it down. He'll cut it from the top, dropping 10' sections. I'll cut my pasture fence and pull it out of the way, so he can have a safe direction to aim the logs. I have a burn pile already started, so I won't have to pay him to haul the carcass away. By this time next week it will be ashes.

Oh, I wish we could have. That would have been so much fun. I'd love to visit with you all again and catch up.
My guess on the tree falling would definitely be the hay barn. That never fails! Or maybe the pasture fence, (if your Dexters were in that field at the time) so they could all wander out and about for you. So much fun trying to round up a group. There is always that ONE, that peels off at the last minute and leads the others back into the woods.
It's good to hear that you were able to get rid of it safely without any big surprises.

The tree surgeon was a pro. I took down the fence and he dropped it right between two T-posts.
The tree was 120 years old and 63 feet tall. A loblolly pine. The Dinwiddie Historical Society came here and took tons of pictures. We're going to be in their newsletter.

Well Now How neat is that! Congratulations on the newsletter! I'm sure they got some great pictures.
That's a pretty good sized tree. Those pines like to come down too. It's good you were able to get it taken down before it caused a problem.
I've got my fingers crossed we won't have fence repairs to do tomorrow. It is so windy here with this front blowing through. First snowflakes of the season too. Yesterday it was beautiful and over 70F. Today it has blown like crazy since a little before noon. Even the cat doesn't want to go out tonight.
Lots of times when it gets like this here the pines will just blow over. With the thin ground they are so shallow rooted, you can watch the wind just push them over roots and all. The oaks will break, but the pines bend. We had one a few yrs ago get pushed over and then another, in such a way that the first tree ended up with the top on the ground and the base way up in the air. Looked pretty funny but the way they were wedged together it wasn't safe to try to work on them. Luckily it was on the outside of the pasture fence so we're just waiting for mother nature to take care of it. LOL. Who knows maybe tomorrow morning

Good to hear Gene.
I haven't walked the fence line today, it's just too windy to take the chance. BUT thankfully everyone is still where they are supposed to be, so this is good. It hasn't slowed down yet and is still blowing like crazy. Things are everywhere. It is going to be quite a mess to clean up. We knew we were going to get some wind, but they weren't calling for it to be like this.
The power is starting to flicker again now. Hopefully it stays on through the night or at least until the fellows get home. I've got my flashlight here right beside me though, just in case. LOL
We actually ended up with about 1" or so of snow this morning. Swirling everywhere. I did feel sorry for the cows this morning, but most of that has blown out now. Thankfully we didn't get alot because it would have been a blizzard.
I didn't see any big trees down when I was out. That one is still wedged up in the tree. Part of it broke off early this summer so I'm hoping the rest will come down on its own. The cat is going to stay in another night. She's not even going towards the door.LOL
